Tutorial: How to use Dashboard by Delphy

Hellos.

Here is a tutorial about how to use the Dashboard tool By Delphy from Mod the Sims.

Dashboard is a very handy program. Here is the description by Delphy, cause I can't really say it any better.

The tool has 4 main tasks...
- To easily show you which games you have, whether or not they have a full framework, and to browse to that games root folder.
- To show you the contents of the Sims 3 cache files, and clear them
- To show you all of your custom content in .package format, and display any "corrupted" files, or Sims 2 content, or stuff that just plain wont work.
- To fix any problems with corrupted files, empty files, generally broken files, and allow you to fix conflicts yourself

If you don't have it yet, you can download it here. "How to install" is told in the download page.

OK, let's run the program. Double click on the Sims3Dashboard.exe it looks like this:

When the program is opened it should look like this:

Up on the left are the Sims 3 Games you have.

- There is a 'Yes' under 'Installed' if you have the game installed to your computer, 'No' if you don't have.
- There is a 'Yes' under 'Framework' if you have working framework (that you need for to be able to use mods in package form), 'No' if you don't have.
- The version of each game is told under 'Version'
- By selecting one of the games it gives you download link for framework installer if you don't have framework yet. And pressing 'Open root' button it takes you to the install folder of the game in question.

Up on the right are the Sims 3 Game Caches. They look like this:

As an explanation to what those files are, I borrow the words on one tutorial at MTS:

"Cache files are temporary files that are saved by the game to make loading certain information faster. If these files have incorrect or corrupted data, it may prevent your game from loading. The game will regenerate fresh copies of these files each time it loads, so deleting them is perfectly safe, and it's normal for them to reappear."

There are 2 options how to delete the caches:
- To delete all at once, by pressing 'Clear all'
- To delete only selected, by selecting the ones you want to delete and pressing 'Empty selected'

I normally use 'Clear all'. When you press it, this question will pop up:
"You are about to clear all caches. Are you sure?" 'Yes' 'No' 'Cancel'
- Select 'Yes' if you are, and you should be if you want them emptied.
- Select 'No' or 'Cancel' if you don't.

After you press yes the caches window should look like this:

Then lets look at the lower window. There are shown all the files you have at 'Packages' folder.

- By pressing 'Refresh List' the list refreshes and you can see the current situation with your mods.
As you can see, I had some corrupted files, they are shown in red color.
If there were duplicates of files (2 or more of the exactly same file) they would be shown in yellow color.
If there were any conflicts they would be shown in orange color.
If there were any Sims 2 packages, they would be shown in dark blue color.
After fixing if there were any disabled files, they would be shown in light blue color.

Now, cause I have corrupted files I need to get them fixed, so they won't make my game slow. what you need to do is to press 'Fix All Problems'
A window like this will pop up. (Ignore the finnish, the buttons are 'Yes' and 'No')

- By pressing 'Yes' the program will go through the files and fix/disable the corrupted files.
- By pressing 'No' the program won't do that.

When you press 'Yes' a window similar to this will pop up:

It tells you how many packages are fixed, and how many are disabled.

After fixing is done, the window should look like this. In my pic the files are exactly the same, so you can see it fixed them.

There are 2 buttons I didn't explain yet. 'Filter...' and 'Select...'
- By pressing 'Filter...' you can select which files the program shows on the window, for example, only corrupted files.
- By pressing 'Select...' you can select (check mark) for example, only disabled files.

I think that is all I can tell you about the program. It has helped me so much, so it would be a shame if some one on a need for it didn't use it cause they didn't know how.

When I open up the Dashboard, everything shows up except the lower window installed package files! I clearly have package files saved in Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages, so why isn't the information showing up? Help!

To my understanding Dashboard has not yet been updated. To browse your package files in their install directory you need to press 'file' - 'Scan folder' and select the folder you have the files in, in this case Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages.

Hi, I have until the fall at night and can not use this program because it does not appraise any of my games. What do I do? Have any other program, or this recent program?

I'm not sure what you mean by "appraise any of my games". If you mean that you can't see any mods on the list, you can try manual browsing to the mods folder.

When you have Dashboard open, press 'file' on up left, and then select 'scan folder'. Then just browse your packages folder. Should be Electronic Arts/mods/packages.

I have the version updated right after Late Night, and it works great for me.

I am having the same problem as everyone else, not being able to see the mods I have listed. I went to file in the top left corner then to scan folders. I clicked libraries> documents> my documents> electronic arts> the sims 3, I was then stuck looking for my mods folder which could not be found.Am I doing something wrong? Please help me resolve this problem. Thank you!

Are your mods installed to that folder? Do you have the folders if you browse them in windows? At what level is your game patched at?

quinn-schwabe said...

my mods are installed in the packages folder found within the mods folder. I have all the folders if i browse them on windows and my game is patched at 4.7.4.010001. I read on the site that the v1.2.3914.26559 version of the program has a bug when scanning the folders. Does this have anything to do with my problem? Do I need the updated version of the dashboard tool?, if so where can I find it?

armiel said...

You can find the latest Dashboard in the link above in the main post.

I'm pretty sure the file description is old, and that the file is actually newer, since I have it and it can browse the packages perfectly where ever they are installed :)

quinn-schwabe said...

what do you mean the file description?

armiel said...

The description in the download tab, if you haven't noticed it, you can keep ignoring it, cause it's a wrong description.

The Post says... v1.2.3914.26559 version of the program has a bug when scanning the folders.

And the rar description say the file is version v1.2.3914.26559, which is old info, cause the file version is at least v1.2.3928.16879 which I have (downloaded from the same location).

So go ahead and get the latest file if you haven't already. It works.

it's still not recognizing or finding my Mods or Packages folders when i download the program. does it have something to do with the resource.cfg file being outside the packages folder? should i put it in? Also my mods and packages folders are capitalized does this affect how the dashboard searches?

armiel said...

I'm amazed if your mods even work in game....

You can't capitalise the folder names, they need to be exactly Mods, and Packages.

the recourse.cfg goes in the Mods folder, the mods go to Packages folder.

With further problems with this please use some bigger forum to post your trouble, I'm one person, and quite busy these days too.

I hope you will have the issue worked out, but it's starting to get out of my league if this post doesn't solve it.

I've figured it out! it took me a while but i realized that i was not scanning through my user on the computer but the users. I went to the computer option, then users, selected mine and went to documents, EA... and there you have it. Thanks for all your help resolving my problem. I'll be sure to visit the site more if I have any other conflicts with the game. Again, THANK YOU!

also just one more thing. If i have the blue lot bug and I fix the package files. Will the blue lots just disappear or will I have to start a new game?

armiel said...

Hey,

I'm glad you sorted it out :)

For blue lots, unfortunately those cannot be fixed, you'll have to start a new game.

Also i was wondering, The program fixed the files highlighted in red, but it did not do anything to the orange. Should i just leave these files or should I delete them. Also can sims3pack files that go onto the launcher when downloaded harm the game?

Is there a way that I can download this version of the dashboard, or with Delphy's permission, can you send me a copy of this one? I can't find an area to download a specified version anywhere else and this is the ONLY version that seems to work for me. My storage hard drive just bombed out on me and I lost EVERYTHING that I ever owned, since Sims 1. :(

I am on MTS2 as well, and requested the same from Delphy, so I'm just covering all ends, in case it's no longer available, if it would be okay to get if from someone who does have it still. I would really appreciate it!!

Hi Armiel!

I was wondering if I could have your permission to translate your tutorial of Delphy's Dashboard in order to post is in a Spanish speaking sims forum.

Thanks!! Maria

To everyone who might be reading these comments... This tutorial is outdated, as well most of the ones on this site (see, i have last posted june 2010 ;)). though they all still work if you just read the instructions on how to use the programs on the download site.

to Maria.
if you still wanna translate this tut, after what I just said, go ahead :) just link back here and make sure you include the links to Delphy's program too :)
