Hello everyone.
This is a tutorial of how to make a fresh install of your sims3packs.
Sometimes you may have installed same content twice, or by accident installed content that you don't wish to install after all. This tutorial is about how to delete those duplicate/unwanted files.
Before you actually start to do anything to your game, read this tutorial through. By taking the actions mentioned you do it at your own risk, this is perfectly voluntary; no-one is forcing you to do it.
Very first step is to back up your saves, go to your MyDocs>Electronic Arts>Sims 3 and copy the Saves folder to desktop.
If that doesn't say anything to you, pic one here, depending on what system you run:
-For Windows Xp: C:/documents and settings/user name/my documents/electronic arts/the sims 3
- For Windows Vista/7: C:/users/user name/documents/electronic arts/the sims 3
- For Mac OS: /users/user name/documents/electronic arts/the sims 3
Then what you need to do is to download and install these two very helpful programs, Dashboard and CCleaner. They are perfectly safe, and I will show how to use them later on this tutorial.
Ok, after you have installed/extracted those, I want you to go to your MyDocs>Electronic Arts>Sims 3 (see earlier) and locate these three folders:
- DCBackup
- DCCache
- Downloads
Take a look inside them, and don't get alarmed when you take a look at DCBackup, it is suppose to look to be full of these:
Those are the items, Sims, houses, all the things you have installed in The Sims 3 Launcher. To check out does this tutorial really do something or not, I suggest you open up DCBackup, press Ctrl+A to select all the files, and then look at the number down on the window, the amount of files. Memorize that number.
Then lets leave that folder for a second and start the actual process. Go find the Downloads folder, don't open it, just press it with right mouse button and select COPY (this is important, make sure to COPY, not cut) then right click on the DESKTOP and select PASTE, the computer should now make a copy of the folder to desktop.
After that is done, open up the LAUNCHER. In there, I want you to go to INSTALLED CONTENT, not downloads. Wait that it loads all, then select all, and uninstall them. (You have the copies at desktop, so it should be safe)
After un-installation is complete, go to Downloads section in LAUNCHER, select all files and delete them. (Again, you have the backups at desktop if you have done like told, So it should be safe)
Then go back to the folders we started with, open Downloads, and check that it is empty, if it's not, empty it by hand. (Delete the files)
Then, open up DCCache and delete all the files in there. Do this same to DCBackup. As a result, all three folders should be empty, check that they are.
The part of the program we are mostly interested now is the one with number 1 (one). As an explanation to what those files are, I borrow the words on one tutorial at MTS:
"Cache files are temporary files that are saved by the game to make loading certain information faster. If these files have incorrect or corrupted data, it may prevent your game from loading. The game will regenerate fresh copies of these files each time it loads, so deleting them is perfectly safe, and it's normal for them to reappear."
Now, what you need to do, is to press the button marked as number 1. It will ask if you want to delete all the caches, just answer yes. The list above the button shouldn't have numbers anymore, just zeros.
Then we might as well take care of your package file lag all at the same, press number 2 to refresh the list, then scroll it down to see if there are any bad files. If there are, press number 3 to repair the selected files. (You can do this anyways, it doesn't break anything)
Now that part should be done, you can close Dashboard.
Then we open up CCleaner. It should look like this: (sorry mine is Finnish, but the buttons are all at the same places)
Open up the Register part of the program. The cleaner is very useful too, but irrelevant to this tutorial. Press button number 1 to Find register errors. It should make a list above the buttons. Once the search is done, press button number 2, it will ask you if you want to back up you registry. If you are a first time user, or just unsure, do it. After that should pop up a question whether you want to repair all the errors, select "yes to all" (Again I apologize if the words are not just the right ones, I translate them from Finnish). After repair is done, repeat the steps 1 and 2 as many times as it takes to get a fresh clean list, like mine above. Then you can close up the program.
(You can restart computer at this point if you want, but it's not necessary)
We are almost at the finish. All you need to do now, is to put the Downloads folder back to its place. Cut it from the desktop, paste back to electronic arts/Sims 3 (see earlier) and then open up the launcher.
Now it would be good time to delete all the stuff you have suspicions to be bad. Before you install the content back, go through the list and see if there are any Sims with funky clothes from Exchange. By funky I mean ones that have made your babies look like blocks, toddlers deformed and so on. You don't really want that stuff back to your game. If you do delete Sims you won't be able to play the saves they were played in, but it's better to have clean game, than pretty Sims that mess it up.
After you have done this, install the content back to game by selecting them all, and pressing install.
Then go to DCBackup, where we started, Ctrl+A to select all the files, check out the amount of them. If the number has changed, you have actually deleted some old copies/bad files, and made your game better.
In my game, taking these actions deleted about 20 files, so it's improvement. Besides I haven't downloaded anything from exchange, so for people who have, the change might be bigger.
Run the game.
It should load up normal speed, or maybe little faster. In game don't get alarmed if it first acts little funny, invisible Sims and such, it's just that the game needs to make new caches.
Notice, that I don't take any responsibility for the actions you have taken by this tutorial. If you have forgotten a step, or done something wrong at some point, it's not my fault.

Thanks Delphy and Piriform for amazing very useful programs, Tom for correcting the language.
Also, what I would like you to do, Is this:
If you have tried this method, make a comment here, so other people can see how it went. When commenting keep in mind that things like "this sucks" aren't very helpfull. Be more precise and mention why it sucks..

Thank you Armi :)) It wasn't so hard to do it. I fallow your steps. I checked dcbackup files and i had 1196 files. After cleaning 967 so 239 files were cleaned! :)))
I had many unnecessary installed stuff that I deleted from downloads but they stil were in the game. Now they are completely gone :D
Unfortunately my naked bottoms still are there but I am 99% sure they were from mods not from sims3packs. I delete the files from mod folder but naked buttoms are in use by some people from my city so obviously they cannot be delated :(
But your theory work great. Thanks :)))
your friend Sana
Wow I am going to try this. Thanks Armi this is really helpful. I will let you know how it goes
Michelle
It worked great!!!!!
My game is faster thanks for takeing the time to make this
Michelle
I am really glad this has improved your games.
Michelle, was there a big difference in the number of files after going through LCC?
Ohhhh and 498 files were cleared from my DCbackup. I started out with 1878 and it went down to 1380
Michelle
Thank you for this great tutorial. my DCBackup was 1540 at the start then after was 601. I had a lot of bad cc from exchange households and all of it is gone now. Your instructions were clear and very easy to follow. Thanks again!
Wow, that is much :P
I am glad that this has helped people to clean up their game. It's always nice to know that your work hasn't gone to waste :)
Easy to use if ur screen looks like the pics .. i had some difficulties but Armi helped. I deleted all my exchange sims and houses ... i lost some good hair and some clothes but not my game runs smooth!! thought i had to restart my legacy challenge because of a certain reason but ended up where everything was fixed and i got to continue my game!
At the beginning my DCBackup had 101 now its down to 60 .
Thanks Armi
That sounds nice :) Good luck with your legacy!
i have an issue, and was told to look at this page, but i dont knwo if it will help me.I thought i would ask you. I had to manually uninstall my game a while back because of an error i was getting that would preven me from playing the game. I then downloaded a system that would pick up any fragment left behind so i would get rid of everything by request of a simguru on the website. Now that i have my games back on, they are working fine. But when i had to uninstall, i had just updated to the newest version of EADM. So it went off with the game. Now, my game works, but i have no EADM. Every time i try to intall it, it gets about an inch of download andjust stops. It wont work. I talked to a cust. service rep. on the EA website, and he just gave me a link to the download and signed off. I have asked for help everywhere, and everyone just tells me to manually uninstall, but i can update my game, and last week i was gifted an item that i cant even use because my game is not up to date. Its driving me crazy. Do you think that its possible it could be my computer? I was thinking about getting a new one with a larger memory for my games in the next week or so. But do you have any idea if it would work for me then?
Hi Anonymous.
I can try to help, but I don't promise anything.
First I'll answer your last question: No, I don't think it is your computer.
Second I need to get clarification to the part: "...i have no EADM. Every time i try to install it, it gets about an inch of download and just stops...." Are you really talking about downloading it, or installing it, cause those are 2 separate things.
I have other questions with directions:
- Have you checked on installed programs (in control panel) that you really don't have EADM on PC? If it shows up, use remove.
- If you have, have you checked that it really has been completely uninstalled? Check out c:/program files ((x86)wit 64 bit windows)/electronic arts/EADM. If that folder exists, and there is: EADMUninstall (application), use that. If there isn't, but the folder exists, delete the whole folder.
- Then use Ccleaner, both the Cleaner and Registy parts. http://armielsims.blogspot.com/2010/03/tutorial-how-to-use-ccleaner.html
- After that, just to be sure, reboot computer.
- Then: Do you have discs for Sims 3? Cause there is an installer for EADM. Right click the disctray icon, and select open. Then browse to 'Support', 'EADM' and use the installer.
- It should install just fine if you have taken all the steps I mentioned before, but if it doesn't there must be something more I don't know off.
- NEVER EVER DO NOT UPDATE EADM!!! That really causess trouble.
That's about all I can think of now. I hope that it helps.
Post a new comment if you have more questions, In day time I do get notification of new comments, so it won't take long for me to answer, if I just am at the PC.
hi i mentioned my problem (blue lots) on the sims 3 facebook page and got directed to this for help. there is just one problem. after i install my content with the launcher, i usually delete it from my downloads folder...so i dont want to uninstall everything because i dont have them in the folder anymore...any advice?
Hi. I think I answered to the same post in FB too. I don't think you need to do whole LCC, just the Dashboard part.
If you do wish to make the whole thing, which I suggest if you have downloaded stuff from exchange, there is no other way to install the content back than redownloading in your case.
I wonder why you have even deleted them? To save space? I myself even have backup folder for downloads, so that I don't need to redownload.
Thank yoou. ;D
Something in my custom content folder was making my towns look flooded with water. i found it thanks to thiss. :] plus my games faster. YAYAY.
I've been meaning to do this for a while but hadnt gotten round to it until tonight,
I did the whole thing....
Before i did deleted the DCBackup folders files i had 668 files in there.... After i had 443!! Nice thanks Armi, your the bestest :D
Weebz ;)
From 2,019 to 1,256! And, I finally got rid of all of these "mystery" files that were clogging up my game.
I did this primarily because I had downloaded a few Sims from the Exchange that came with some rather nasty bits of clothing that borked my babies, toddlers, and kids. Seeing adult boots, naked pants and an adult shirt on a kid is a scary thing in CAS.
Thank you!
Thanks for this Armi! Finally got rid of a horrible top that was deforming my children! :D My game is running much smoother too.
HELP!! My computer keeps shutting down the SIMS 3 Dash Board!! I downloaded it as an exe. file but it won't come up!! I really need some help here because I'm not really computer knowledgeable and that has worked against me when trying to follow your instructions!! So far so good..UNTIL THIS!! Please help!! Frustrated and at my wits end!!
heya Anonymous.
I kinda have a feeling here that you have been unable to extract the Dashboard from the rar-file it comes in?
Only thing I really can do is to direct you to "how to use Dashboard" and "how to use winrar" tutorials I have in this blog.
Dashboard is ment to be extracted to a folder. All the files that come in the rar need to be in same folder when you run Dashboard. Then you can run it.
I followed everything and my game is ALOT faster but riverview is gone and so is my legacy 11 generations are gone!!! I am almost in tears! is there anything that can help me get it back?! ANYTHING?????????
WhitneyW:
I take this that you had the legacy game in Riverview? If you haven't deleted your 'saves' folder, or content in it your game is still there.
Did you try redownloading Riverview? If you are unable I can't really help cause it seems to be a bug either at Sims 3 website or launcher.
You need to "join the forces" of many other people who play Riverview, and plea to EA that they fix the bug.
I reinstalled Riverview and now it works thanks!
ok i have done this and everything is fast and i have my legacy back; thanks! But there is still bad CC in my game! Any suggestions???
You can try with Sims 3 pack Cleaner (CUSTARD).
Here is a tutorial my friend made: http://glitzyangel-sim.blogspot.com/2010/05/custard-tool-by-delphy.html
Im having an issue downloading the dashboard program when i click on it says im not logged in (but i am) and that theres no cookies found and i did what it said to add it as a cookie what should i do
Hi Mimi.
When you sign in to MTS you need to check the box 'remember me' before entering the site.
I suggest you log off, then retry by doing this. If it still doesn't work, check Site questions and issues forum for already answered posts about the subject. http://modthesims.info/forumdisplay.php?f=24
Also as a notice to all who have this patch that came when ambitions was released (1.12/2.7/3.3/4.0), Dashboard is not yet updated at this point to read the package files directly from the new install directory. So when you use it you need to press 'folder' then 'scan folder' and browse to the new package folder. Then just use it like the tutorial says.
my game had previously been running incredibly slow before i did this, but now it loads sooo much faster!! i have been having some problems though (they were already there before i completed this tutorial)! i am not able to click on my sims or interact with them in any way or form! thats what lead me to do this tutorial because someone had mentioned that it may be my CC because all of my sims 3 expansion packs and stuff pack are updated! so im left clueless!! any ideas?
Rose:
No ideas, sorry.... Post on thesims3.com forums, the sims featured members on facebook, or any other sims 3 forum that has a lot of active members who can help and might have solution.
this worked grate sure seeded it up for me i was having to w8 15 min for game to load it was terrible i went from 2559 to 1639 a 920 file difference thank you
I supposed that this would work for mac users to since you started with explaining how to make a backup for mac. Unfortunately all the programs needed for this are windows based, is there a way around that?
I copied the backupping from another site, indeed the programs used in this are only for windows and i don't know if there are similar programs for MAC.
The programs are needed to repair packagefile lag, and clean up registries, so if there are programs for MAC to do those, you can use them. Cachefiles can be deleted by hand, you can search google for "deleting caches in sims 3" if you are unsure of which files to delete.
Thanks for the help armiel^^ If I do happen to find a similar procedure for mac would it be okay if I post a link here?
Yamakawa
Sure it's ok, that would be very helpful :)
do you really need the ccleaner program to get rid of them????
You can try without it, but I strongly suggest you use it, or any program with same features.
Although it went from 129 to 123 I am still having the same problem with my game. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game and it is still doing it. I didn't use the ccleaner program but I will for sure try it and see what happens. For me, the problem is the sims clothing looks fuzzy and not as clean/detailed, and also my sims house has a strange stretched something in it that reminds me of a crystallized formation, some times it just stays gray and other times it looks like the roof, if any one else is having this problem please help!
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH A LAUCHER THAT SHUTS OFF, IT LOADS AND EVERYTHING THEN AS SOON AS THE CHARACTER MOVES IT SHUT OFF, NO WARNING NOTHING. IF I CLEAN EVERYTHING AND REDO IT ALL DO YOU THINK THAT WILL HELP. I'VE BEEN DEALING WITH 3 DAYS OF HELL TRYING TO WORK THIS THINGS I EVEN DID AN UNISTALL, REINSTALL EA EVEN TERMINATE MY ACCOUNT FOR TELLING THEM OFF ABOUT THE CONSTANT THROWING PPL AT HELP ME FORUM THAT DONT WORK I NEED YOUR HELP PLZ

Yelling at me doesn't give me the slightest urge to help you.
Also, this is not a general help blog. I only offer support to the tutorials I have posted.
If you need help with your launcher problems, use google, or post to any sims 3 site that has game/technical support.
Armi~
First, let me say thank you so much!
I am just finishing installing my content back, but my files went from 1335 to 1201 (it'll probably go up again when I reinstall some sims3package files there weren't corrupted but I had removed because they all had numbers as the names and I couldn't tell which one was the ones that gave me issues. I'll probably sort that issue out later..)
I'll test my game out soon and pray that it fixes my issue (my sims in my legacy wouldn't die...they just turned into ghosts and hovered. The grim reaper never showed up, nor did I get a tombstone/urn for the dead sim, and it remained a member of my family), and I'll comment again later to let you know if it helped.
Either way, this has been a great help, because I needed to do this anyway but wasn't sure how.
Thank you so, so much! <3
~~Ashi~~
Armiel,
Thank you for this helpful tutorial. I have a question: what will happen if I only delete the files in the DCbackup folder and then restart the game? I recently cleaned the Downloads folder and know for sure that there are no bad files and sims in it. The problem is that long ago some bad cc installed as part of the SIMs and lots that contained it and that cc are not individual files in the downloads folder, and they don't show in the "installed" section of the Launcher either. But they stay in the game no matter what I do. Is there any way at all to get rid of those, other than making a clean install of the game ? (which I don't want to do). I was thinking that clearing the DCbackup folder might help, what do you think?
Thanks
Ashi,
glad that it helped, what comes to your savegame one can only have their hopes up, getting rid of bad cc doesn't usually help on a save that is already corrupted somehow, but the new games you start after it... :)
Georgin,
if you only delete the DCBackup folder you'll have none of the sims3packages installed (that is the place where they ARE installed) while the launcher would still say they are. I strongly suggest that you do each step of this tutorial to make sure that bad files are gone for good. You can skip the bit that suggests you deleting the bad files from your downloads as you have already done that. You don't need to do a clean install of the game - this tutorial should help you get rid of the bad content with 99,5% (leaving 0,5% for the very weird situations where nothing helps)
I would also suggest checking the sims3packs you have left with CUSTARD by Delphy, but this is a totally voluntary part. I have used it a lot myself, and it's been a great help. If you do decide to use it, just read the post carefully beforehand :) http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=390235
Hello -
I haven't made it all the way through w/o getting confused. I deleted everything like it said. The 3 folders under the sims 3 are now empty and I have my copy of the downloads folder on my desktop.
I am trying to use the dashboard - but absolutely nothing comes up on there. Am I missing something?
hey kelly,
you need to browse to your package files in Dashboard. Click "File" and select "Open Folder". Then browse to your Packages folder.
After that you should be able to continue with the tutorial.
Hi kelly
wow i just finished the stpes and a big difference it went form 3814 to 60!
Thanks for this tutorial, helped trememdously. I deleted 3000+ old files from my DCBackup using this method. Helped my game run a lot smoother!
this was the worst help.
no-one even said what default programme to open up the CCleaner with. when i double clicked the MTS_Delphy_1048017_Sims3Dashboard.RARFile with. i have vista and i clicked it and it wouldn't open.
I have used this before and it has always worked fantastic!
I just did this process again today and I started with 1,684 and when I was done I had 508! i was in shock!
Thanx for this great tutorial Armi! :D
i started out with 1,399 files in my DCBackup folder. when i finished your tutorial, and the download all put back where they belong(took FOREVER to reinstall all my downloads! :D), i ended up with 907 files! that's -492 files! thank you SOOOO much! and it only took 3 min to load my game when it used to take well over 10 min!
